Goodbye February, Goodbye Summer

That has to be the most depressing title yet. Gosh. January flew by, and now suddenly February has vanished too. I can feel the change in the air, the sun has moved over and the green leaves are slowly starting to fade, and for the past week it’s been cold, gloomy and rainy almost all day.

Ccan you believe we’re already into Lent? I’m terrible at choosing something to give up that isn’t chocolate, coffee or snack related. I don’t eat much chocolate or snack very much (usually Provitas with cheese) and coffee is impossible. I think I’m going to give up using my phone as an extension of my PC, no Facebook, email, nothing. Just a good old fashioned phoned again. And I’m also going to give up sitting by the PC at night, and spend some time with my family.

So, with February coming to a close, so ends my February photos. It seems my usual Facebook page from Nikon SA hasn’t got a challenge for this month, so I’ll have to find one elsewhere on the web! Any recommendations?!

Our group of friends has recently started having a Wednesday social evening, so we get to hang out more often in a budget-friendly way. Last week we went ten-pin bowling. I sucked completely, but only because I was laughing so hard. We tried playing darts last week, and I sucked at that too. I know I can’t aim, it’s a curse! Does anyone else here suffer from aimlessness?

We were super lucky in going to see Nitro Circus Live here in Johannesburg! Oh my goodness. These guys (and girl) are just amazing, the skill and precision they have when performing tricks and stunts is mindboggling. I wish I’d been able to take my camera into the stadium, but sadly they’re super strict and only media can do so. However, a buddy of mine took hers with as she’s an accredited motorsport photographer, and her photos are insane. Check them out here!

Here are my last shots for February (yes, I’m missing 28, but sadly I never got round to shooting it!). Holding thumbs I’ll find another daily challenge to try and keep my creativity up every day.

Love Bug & The Week From Hell

As luck would have it, my body decided to treat me to a case of love sickness on Valentine’s Day. Yup. I woke up with an horrible migraine in my right eye, which is unusual for me at this time of the year. I usually get early summer migraines, which happen when the temperatures spike in October, and my body isn’t used to the heat, resulting in a migraine or two. But this was hell. So I decided to have an anti-inflammatory – on an empty stomach. Stupid idea! Not 30 minutes later, that anti-inflammatory and the single cracker I’d eaten came right back up. Nice eh? I was in seven shades of hell, but at least my body temperature sorted itself out, and I got to sleep some of it off.

Thankfully it was all mostly gone so we could enjoy our evening out at the Lipizzaners in Kyalami – the only performing school of Lipizzaners out of Austria. Needless to say, I wanted to take them all home! ♥ Can’t wait to go to a Sunday morning performance and take my camera, get some proper shots of them. Last night my cellphone had to suffice!

I hope everyone had a great Valentine’s Day, and if you didn’t do anything romantic, I hope you had an awesome Friday nonetheless! I know I used to hate VDay during school, purely because of the raging teenage hormones that made one feel pathetic if you didn’t get anything from someone. It’s overrated from a commercial aspect, so I just take it as an opportunity to do something different or just hang out with my boyfriend. We don’t do it often, so it’s nice to get out every now and then. 🙂

So, this week was hectic from start to finish, including my website crashing. Yup. My hosting guys were having maintenance done on their server, and both drives decided to fail. They managed to get a new server sorted quickly, but unfortunately I lost my data, including my client’s emails. Thankfully I got all my client’s sites up and running easily (Old school HTML sites ftw!) but my WordPress site took a lot longer to get up and running again. I thought I’d lost weeks of work on my site, but it turns out that WordPress was epic and somehow backed up a lot of the work I thought I’d lost. Score! Since then, I have backed everything up, and am buying a lovely 3TB external drive to store it all in, as well as investigating in some Cloud storage and automatic backup software. I’m more worried about my clients’ stuff getting messed up than my own, so I want to make sure that’ll never happen again!

Thanks to all that madness, I didn’t have much of a chance to upload any of my daily shots since the start of Feb, but here they are! Have a lovely weekend folks!

Getting Back In The Game

Gosh, can you believe that January is already gone?! I have a feeling this year is going to fly by, I may as well start buying Christmas gifts already!

This past weekend was fun and interesting, something we haven’t done in ages. On Friday we went to our favourite local hangout, Monte Casino, for dinner. For once it wasn’t my suggestion, so I was pretty excited! We then went for some ten-pin bowling, because it’s a whole lot of fun, even if you do suck at it! We had some people join our game and they were pretty interesting and fun! It reminded me of how being spontaneous is actually a good thing! We then wandered around, grabbed some drinks and headed home through an intense storm and torrential rain. On Sunday we headed out at some crazy early hour to an RC car track for a day of racing. Yes. Racing RC cars. It sounds funny, but you should try it! These guys are seriously passionate and dedicated, friendly and knowledgeable too, and happy to help. We hit a few hiccups before the main race, and hit even more hiccups as the race started, but it was a ton of fun!

I’m starting this week with early mornings as I’m ferrying my boyfriend’s cousins around to and from school. I’ve never been an early morning person, but I can manage it as long as long as there is coffee! I’m also meeting a few people this week that might turn into some new and interesting projects, so holding thumbs it will all go well! And one exciting thing happened yesterday – my photo for Day 27 made it into the Top 10 for Nikon South Africa’s Facebook page! 🙂 It was one of the nominations for their Fan Photo Cover images, but sadly the composition didn’t work out. However, being a nomination was an honour in itself, so I’m a happy bunny!

At last, I caught up on the last few shots for the month and eagerly awaited the new themes for the month. They were a bit delayed, so I have some catching up to do today, but those will be up by the end of the week. This month seems to be very love-themed, but don’t expect tons of pinks and reds from me. I’m a hopeless romantic, but not to that extent. So I’ll make it interesting, not too lovey-dovey, cus not all of us can handle it!

Catching Up

It’s been a busy while since my last post, but not much to say about it all! I had my birthday bash – a pirate themed party that went down a hit, and my parent’s celebrated 25 years of marriage. 2 parties in 2 weekends is the most we’ve ever done, so I’m a little pooped to say the least! I finally launched my new website – be sure to check it all out here. I’ve got a ton of new projects lined up that I’m super excited about and ready to dig into, and I’ve got my daily photos to keep me busy. I haven’t had a chance to upload them all here, so brace yourself for some Photo-A-Day spammage below!

Oh Summer!

The past few days have been the most wonderful summer days! Beautiful blue skies, with the occasional fluffy white cloud flitting across before it fizzled and faded in the heat. The gentlest breeze to dissipate the unbearable heat. Iced coffees, ice cream and ice-cold juice. This is what summer is made of! I’m a summer baby, having been born in January, and I love the heat. In fact, the hotter the better. Having worked in an chilly 20 degrees centigrade office space, my body would automatically shut down to keep me warm. Trust me, I get cold easily – anything less than 25 degrees is cold for me. That would explain why I adored the 40 degree plus heat in Dubai all those years ago. Bliss!

Thankfully, in this heat I can really enjoy working. With the study door open and the fan going, I can look outside, see some blue sky, and work away. I’m not really missing anything – just some sunburn! This past week I started working on my official website, which is coming together quite nicely, and I’m hoping it’ll be up and running on Friday! Going through all the projects I’ve completed has really brought back some good memories, and reminds me why I love what I do. 🙂

Over the past week, I’ve also been continuing my photo-a-day challenges. Some where a little more challenging, but others were fun. We had a horde of thousands of white butterflies flying from the south west, and it was beautiful to watch! I made my own DIY bokeh shape to create ‘square’ bokeh. I poured an entire tube of gold glitter onto fabric, photographed it, and realised what a mission it was going to be to clean it up! Lint rollers ftw! I had a brief episode of sounding like a nutter, walking around trying to find something with the letter ‘R’ in it. I looked crazy. I cheated and used an old photo – since strawberries aren’t in season here, and I wasn’t paying a fortune for some local ones. I reminisced an old tree. Reminisced about the good ol’ times of playing pretend. Watched butterflies. Photographed the most photographed tree in our garden, but just the leaves, no spring flowers this time. That was my week in photos – hope you enjoy them!

Day 4 – Snack Time. Who can resist warm crumpets slathered with butter until it melts and gets absorbed? Yum.

Day 5 – Square. My attempt at ‘square’ bokeh. It was a ton of fun, perhaps I’ll try this again!

Day 6 – Favourite Colour. Needless to say, it’s gold and purple. I can’t resist the allure of gold glitter.

Day 7 – The Letter ‘R’. I cut out glitter-foam letters that said ‘Toy Run 2013’ and stuck them on the bike during the run. Good memories.

Day 8 – Strawberries. This one I had to cheat on. Strawberries aren’t in season, and I wasn’t going to pay nearly R40 for a punnet! Besides, I really like this photo, and never got to share it before.

Day 9 – Wood. This was a giant camphor tree in our garden. Was. Unfortunately it was wrongfully cut down when our neighbours complained about their gutters being full of leaves, but failed to mention it was another tree. Needless to say, I don’t like them anymore.

Day 10 – Fishing. With no seaside for fishing, and no point in going to fishing farms for lack of experience in fishing, I turned to my childhood imagination of fishing in the swimming pool.

Day 11 – Black and White. Thousands of these beauties descended upon our garden, and it was so mesmerising to watch and photograph them on the lavender flowers.

Day 12 – Jagged. This tree is usually photographed for it’s stunning spring blossoms, and I’ve never noticed their beautiful jagged leaves before, until now.

2014 do all things with love

2014 – With Love

Having now gone freelance into design and photography, I can feel I’m actually doing what I enjoy. What I love. 2013 was a learning year, even though I didn’t even go to any kind of educational institute. No diplomas or degrees could teach me what I learnt last year, which was about the person I really am. Studying taught me about what I like and how I work, but putting that into practice with my actions, attitudes and beliefs was the toughest but most enlightening thing I’ve ever encountered. I learnt that I’m not a creature of habit – I don’t thrive in routine and repetition, and I definitely need a window to look out of every once in a while! However, I also learnt that I can sit down and work for hours – and have something to produce in the end! I can also handle questions and clients and co-workers. I learnt that I absolutely cannot handle a quad grande latte from Seattle – no matter how delicious it tasted! And that if I don’t eat breakfast, I’m officially screwed for the rest of the day.

The most important thing 2013 is that I need to do what I love and what I’m good at – and I can’t settle. So, 2014 is going to be a year of ‘love’ – I will love what I do, do what I love, and put a lot of love into what I do!

2014 do all things with love

If you’ve read other blog posts, you’ll know that I used to take part in the Nikon Photo A Day Challenge. I completed a few months successfully, but having started working last year, this became impossible. Now that I have a little more flexibility during the day, I can get back onto the tracks. I loved this challenge, it gave me a chance to experience and be creative in as little as 30 minutes. So my challenge is back – I’ll be posting them weekly with the photos for the past few days. Thanks for reading and hope you enjoy seeing the shots from the challenge over the next few weeks!

Day 1 – The Beginning: I started a new book, Revenge Wears Prada, and I’ve missed having a good book to read!

Day 2 – Pearl. I’m not a huge fan of pearls, but they are a classic. I do actually have a few old pieces with pearls that I unearthed for this project.

Day 3 – Lime Green. I simply love lime green – it’s in my bathroom, my nail polish, and my go-to colour for anything green when I design. It’s fresh, vibrant and always gives me a bit of a smack in the face, something I sometimes need.

When Life Hands You Lemons

When life hands me lemons, I usually run for the painkillers and wait for the pain to pass, since I can’t handle acidic things. Its the same when things get rough – I prepare to deal with that’s going to happen next, and let it happen. If there’s any way for me to prevent it, I will, and I’ll think non-stop until I find a solution to the looming disaster.

This past week, however, things got pretty rough. And hence the lack of photos and posts, because life gave me one too many lemons to handle for a day or two, and then the rest I used to catch up with my life. Firstly, I suffered a nasty abcess which was pressing on my trigeminal nerve, and left me in pain for 2 days before I got hold of some antibiotics. A few days later, when I felt fully recovered, I decided to paint my bedroom. It’s been stripped of it’s light brown, dark brown and teal colours to be replaced by a vivid purple and a light mauve. It’s looking fantastic, but it means I’ve been camping out in the living room on my inflatable mattress when I haven’t been at my boyfriend’s house. So, between life happening to me and me grabbing hold of life, my photos took a backseat. I did manage to take them, but no editing was done til the weekend. So, here are the past few days’ worth of photos, and more to come since I’m still catching up!

Day 17 - Sneaky Snack
Day 17 – Sneaky Snack

Managed to snap this the other day while I was wondering around trying to take photographs of the butterflies on the lavender. One managed to stay still for longer than half a second, so I got a close as I dared while I tried to get the shot. As I continued to look through the lavender, I came across this Praying Mantis having a nice snack on a bee – in the middle of all the other bees buzzing around! It was quite a surprise, but it suited the theme, and I think the mantis was quite happy, sadly if not the bee.

Day 18 - 'N'
Day 18 – ‘N’

N is for… nail polish. I love the stuff, it’s as bad as buying shoes, only cheaper but requires a lot more patience! I never did master the art of putting paint on my nails during school since we couldn’t wear it to school, so it was only after high school that I could finally let my nails grow and put some decent colour on them. Then, for different seasons, I would do different colours to match the season – Christmas being the best! A few years ago I did red and green, then red and white, then red, and last year was gold glitter. It’s far too addictive, but my collection is growing – it’s actually almost twice this, if not more! And I never seem to have enough colours!

Day 20 - Bird
Day 20 – Bird

Birds aren’t my favourite to photograph, probably because I didn’t really enjoy having them sit all over me when I fed them in the park in the UK. They’re beautiful creatures, light and quick and colourful, but I never seem to find a fondness for them. But when I wandered round the garden to find my subjects for this topic, I was joined by two noisy Bulbuls, who I think were highly annoyed by my presence. They shouted and tweeted and hopped around from branch to bird, pausing to watch me and cock their heads. I grabbed my shots while I could and left them to screech in peace, which they happily did for the next 30 minutes or so.

Day 22 - You (Me)
Day 22 – You (Me)

One of the few photographs of myself that has barely been edited. I definitely prefer to be behind the camera, I’m not a model and I sure don’t intend on being one any time soon. At least with self portraits, I get to be the judge of what I do, and I probably wouldn’t do well with someone trying to pose me and push the boundaries of my insecurities. So, unless it happens to be my boyfriend, I doubt anyone will ever get a decent shot of me, other than me!

Day 23 - Superhero
Day 23 – Superhero

My gran was and is my superhero. I think all grandmothers should be. While she did drive me mad with typical granny stuff, and sometimes I felt I was too cool to be babied or spoilt, she loved and cared for me regardless. To the point where she ran around behind me trying to feed me, when I apparently would not be fed. I’ll always remember her frikkadels, scotch pancakes, and eggs, bacon, sausages and homemade chips. It was the best! And I always remember mixing my peas with my mashed potatoes, which I still do to this day. She was a brilliant organist, she had an insanely good musical ear and mind, and she was the most loving woman on this planet. If I could grow up to be like any family member, I’d like to be like her.

Day 24 - New
Day 24 – New

A relatively new plant to our garden that constantly flowers, and it’s a nice addition, since our nasty neighbours had us chop down one of our beautiful old camphor trees. Since that loss, we’ve been putting in new flowers, plants and trees to help boost the now empty looking garden. I think this is a potato plant, not that it grows potatoes, but it’s some sort of relative. I don’t have much of a green thumb or brain, so I couldn’t possibly be sure if this is the truth or not!

Day 25 - Friday Night
Day 25 – Friday Night

I remember living for Friday nights just so we could go out and party. Drink, dance, laugh and be happy, and look back on Monday morning to think of the good times, and carry on living for the next Friday. Now, Fridays are a night to snuggle up and watch a movie, maybe visit friends, or go out for dinner. Stuff that doesn’t mean running around, jumping, dancing and working up a sweat! This particular Friday night was the opening of the movie Wreck-It Ralph, which we’ve been dying to see since early last year. So, we went off to Monte Casino – we got soaked on the way there on the bike! – and had a fabulously relaxed night. We went to the best burger place – Gourmet Garage – and sat upstairs on the balcony and watched people wandering around. Monte Casino for the non South Africans is a ‘leisure centre’ that mimics Monte Cassino in Rome. It’s definitely quite the spectacle, and if you don’t look up to the fake painted ceiling, you would almost think you weren’t in South Africa any more. So, we had a splendid supper and then thoroughly enjoyed the movie, and finished off with coffee from Seattle Coffee Co. It was a simple night, no partying, dancing or drinking, but it was happy, relaxed and perfect, and you can’t ask more than that!

Day 26 - A Person You Love
Day 26 – A Person You Love

I’ll never say no to a chance to photograph this wonderful person. He’s too photogenic for words, and he’s the most amazing and special man I’ve had the privilege of loving. He drives me crazy and keeps me sane at the same time, and I love him for doing so. I’d sit and carry on about every little thing about him that I love, but I’d be here all day and night. But he’s the best, and I’m so grateful for having someone so special like him in my life!

Of All The Purple Things

This was a rather fun challenge, even though I couldn’t decide what to photograph since I have way too many purple things. Several years ago I went into the colour scheme mode of blues and browns, and about 3 years ago I moved over to purple. I’ve got so many things, including dresses, corsets, earrings, nail polish, silk flowers, makeup and my best is my bright purple gym ball/office chair. Since then, I’ve managed to accumulate so much purple in my room – and my walls haven’t been painted yet! At least I managed to go get some paint swatches last week, so I’m a small step closer to painting it, but when that might happen, who knows.

Day 16 - Purple
Day 16 – Purple

With this shot, I tried to channel my wedding photography skills and treat the earrings like those I would photograph along with rings, other jewellery, shoes and dresses. It took a while, because while I was looking for something bright and a little more high-key, I suddenly found how much I loved this shot with the dark greens and browns in the background, and the bokeh has to be my favourite. I am quite proud of this shot, and I hope you like it too!

Whoever wrote the list of daily themes must’ve also known how my life was going to pan out this month. Some of the themes have been uncannily apt for each day. Today, well, today’s theme is a toughie for me. Usually I’d love the challenge of having hope, because I’m such an eternal optimist. But not today. Today I feel further from hope than the distance between the North and South Poles – times a million!

An accumulation of finishing my studies, battling to find work, and being immensely broke is a combo that has pushed me right down. I’m not the kind of person to let people do things for me, especially if I have something worthwhile to contribute and pull my weight. Now that I’m not studying or working, I feel like I’m letting myself down, as well as my family, friends and lecturers. I feel like I’ve got all the skills, but there don’t seem to be any opportunities that’ll let me show them off. It’s driving me round in circles of madness and frustration.

But, being bogged down here by my own mental abuse, I can still see a teeny tiny faint light of hope. It might be far away, but it’s there and it’s in my sight. So, I’m going to buck up, be positive and if there isn’t an opportunity, I’m going to have to make one. I’m going to have to push, stretch and squeeze, but that might just help me get somewhere. And that somewhere might just be exactly where I want to be.

Day 15 - Hope
Day 15 – Hope

So, always have hope. And here’s a little something I read earlier that inspired some hope in me, so if you need some hope too, I hope this helps. I got it from a blog post by one of my absolute favourite wedding photographers, Christine Meintjes, and she brightened my day when I read her article and this little piece. So, go have a look at her article too if you enjoyed mine!

Christine Meintjes
I know very little, but what I do know is this.

Catching Up

The past few days have just been insane, and while I had only a few moments to take a photo for each day, there was just no time to put them on my PC, edit them and blog about them. But all the business was a good thing, so in my absence I was actually having a lot of fun! So, without further ado, here are the last few days worth of daily photos!

Day 10 - Neighbour
Day 10 – Neighbour

Ah, our neighbours. As the saying goes, “If you haven’t anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all”. Well, I’m tempted to say nothing at all, but I think from this statement, you’ll realise I don’t have the warmest of feelings towards our neighbours. So I’ll leave out all the nasty bits, and dig up something positive. We used to have the most wonderful view of Northcliff Hill, but several years ago, our previous neighbours sold their house, and the new neighbours built their double storey monstrosity for two and a half years. Yes. Two and a half. Since then, the view of the hill has long since vanished, leaving us to image what it looks like now, or break out the old photos of the once gorgeous view. So this is quite a bittersweet image for the theme, because it brings memories of anger, frustration and disappointment.

Day 11 - Learning
Day 11 – Learning

Learning. This will be my first year since I was 3 years old that I won’t be learning at an institution. Many people would be happy, but I’m actually rather sad. Yes, sad. I don’t miss primary school or high school, but I miss going to university. It was most definitely the best four years of my life, and I think I learnt more there than at primary school and high school put together! Alright, that’s not quite true. But I learnt far more in terms of skills I’d use in the professional world, skills that turned me into the designer I am now, and the person I am now. I’m a completely different person to the one I was when I left high school, and I’m glad. I’m grateful for the past 4 years of stress, hard work, tears, anger, learning, progression, happiness, joy and fun. I’d go do it all again, I swear! The people I met, the lecturers who taught me, the places I went to, the designs I made where all part of a special experience, and one that I’ll never forget. So, I’m sad to not be learning in such an environment again. I know I’ll never stop learning, but being able to learn there was just the best possible thing I could’ve imagined, and more.

So, if you’re in Johannesburg, and you’re looking for a brilliant place to study, love visual design and technology, then do yourself a favour and go to the Multimedia Department at the University of Johannesburg. Do it, embrace it, love it. I did, you will too.

Day 12 - A Corner
Day 12 – A Corner

Alright, this is rather uninspiring, but the day was too busy for me to think! I had a bunch of friends round for a braai – or for you non-South Africans, a BBQ. Our house isn’t naturally tidy, so most of the morning was spent tidying things, moving things and covering things up. This was one of our useful hiding tools – a screen that blocked the entrance to our ‘everything we don’t need or use goes here’ room. Thankfully it’s usually a temporary situation, and once people have left and we’ve recovered, things go back to where they should be and we can function again!

Day 13 - Your Weekend
Day 13 – Your Weekend

This weekend was definitely one of the best I’ve had in a while! Having some of my fantastic friends over for a braai was so much fun, if not a little crazy at times. We’re loud, bouncy and generally don’t have limits. I have a wide range of friends, from the most quiet, conservative people to the loud, crazy party animal people! But I love them all, and without them, my weekend probably would’ve been a terribly boring one, and so would my life! We had loud speakers blasting music (which ended up being a disaster because apparently my Windows Media Player loves Rihanna more than I do!) and games, laughs and just a good time allround. And to top it all off, I spoke to one of my favourite composers – Jacob Israel. His work is incredible, something totally refreshing to the usual scores and soundtracks I listen to. His stunning fusion of classical piano and insane digital stuff just blows my mind every time I hear it. I almost died when I found out he was on the other side of the phone I held to my head, and I could barely think to speak! It was rather mind boggling, to say the least. If you enjoy instrumental music, check out his page and take a listen. Listen to ‘Glassface’, and be prepared to be amazed – it’s incredible! You can find his work right here:

So, after all the madness on Saturday, Sunday was a nice lazy day. Some friends stayed over, and we had bacon and eggs for breakfast and took it really slow. If I could have more weekends like that, I’d gladly welcome them after a long busy week. 🙂

Day 14 - A Secret
Day 14 – A Secret

Secrets. They’re quite evil things, I feel. Most of my teenage life was shrouded in a cloud of secrets. “Don’t tell so-and-so I say this”, or “I’m telling you this, but please don’t tell them I told you”, or “Don’t tell anyone, it’s our secret”. And it gets tiring, until your mind is literally tied down in secrets and you have nothing left to say. I have very few secrets, but half the time I don’t remember them, so they’re not really secrets in the end. Secrets can hurt, sometimes they hide what’s necessary, and in the end, it’s just not worth it. Secrets are the byproduct of two-faced people, and being two-faced gets you nowhere. I learnt that the hard way, but looking back, I’m glad I learnt. I may have lost a lot, but the things I lost were things I didn’t deserve to have in the first place, and I wouldn’t want them back today if I had the chance. Don’t keep secrets, they’re not worth it in the end.
