Goodbye 2015 – Hello 2016!

2015 has long gone, and here’s into 2016! Hooray! I’ll admit, I was actually relieved to see the back of 2015 when we shouted ‘Happy New Year!’ to our friends that night. It was a blur of a year for me, being my most emotionally unstable year due to personal issues. Plus it was my busiest year for work, even though I may not feel like I have much to show for it! I took on new retainer clients and did less individual client work, but I actually enjoyed it all! It’s was a big year of learning and growing, and I’ve love to share some things I’ve learnt, maybe at the end of 2016 I’ll have some more things to share.

Try Something New.

I’d taken on some new projects this year that I never thought I’d take on. Before, I would’ve seen the project being too far out of my scope of abilities. I would’ve rather sent it onto someone else who could’ve done the project, saving me some stress and time. But, instead, I took them on, and they actually turned out great. Pushing myself wasn’t a bad thing, so now I have new things to add to my little box of tricks, and I have happy clients.

It’s ok to say no.

This year I was lucky enough to get two new full-time retainer design clients, so a lot of my design time went to their projects. While other branding and website projects were knocking at my door, and I so badly wanted to take them on, I realised my time was limited. If I try take on a project where I physically don’t have the time, I’ll just end up making a mess of the project, and letting the client down. Saying no meant I had fewer large projects, but I had fewer disappointed clients, and projects I was proud that I’d completed. I also followed my gut when I received an enquiry from a client and felt that it wasn’t going to be a good match between client and designer. I’m a firm believer in things happening for a reason, that things are meant to be together. There were some briefs I received that gave me this uncomfortable feeling in my gut that couldn’t be ignored. So I turned them away. Just because I’m a designer doesn’t mean I’m the one for you. I realised it’s part of my job to realise that not every job is meant for me, so I refer them to other designers who I think will be a better fit. And it’s ok!

Don’t try please everyone.

I had a number of ‘pro-bono’ jobs I did for family and friends because, well, I just couldn’t say no to their puppy-eyed pleas. But it took just one experience that gave me a great wakeup call, and I realised those jobs aren’t such a great idea. I had someone ask me to do a ‘quick logo design’ over a weekend. I’d had things planned for that weekend, and I cancelled pretty much everything for the weekend. I stayed up late to work on it, only to find the worst lack of communication ever, and they went with a logo that has been “slapped together in 10 minutes”. Not only had I missed out on a great weekend, but now I looked like an incompetent designer. I quickly realised it was a bad idea to try please someone who needed something urgently because I thought I was helping them. Instead, I got burned. I learnt that it doesn’t matter who is asking the favour. Just don’t say yes to jobs to please someone.

With all of that said, I’ve also grown a lot in my design skills, and I’ve got a little more in my pocket for the next year of design! I can only put it down to my clients who’ve stuck with me and trusted me with their design work! I can’t begin to thank everyone for their patience, trust and enthusiasm with each project! Here’s to more exciting things coming in 2016!

Weekly Ginger Bites

Last week was, well, simply madness – and that’s the reason why I sadly didn’t get round to doing a post for Ginger Bites! Since then things have calmed down and I’ve been able to think straight again, thank goodness.

Since my last post, I’ve been to a few pilates classes and I love it! It really does burn, and is such a workout, but it doesn’t make me feel like I’m going to keel over and die! I’m honestly rubbish with anything cardio related, so something of a quieter nature has always appealed to me. I love the calm quiet music and our instructor is so happy and cheerful – she really makes those last 8 seconds to agony a little more fun! Now, usually I’d be at pilates right now – but, my right wrist has decided to funk out on me with a case of tendinitis, so I’ve had to take a day off and hope it gets better, because I’m already missing it! I can’t wait to get back, but I’m not pushing my wrist – using it for typing and working is tough enough! I’m hoping this time next week I’ll be enjoying my pilates and feeling the burn!

I’ve had two big websites launch over the past two weeks – and Both had their challenges, but I’m so glad we got them going at long last! I’ve got one very exciting project with an overseas friend, creating a special logo inspired by nature and gold foiling. I can’t wait to show you all!

Now, most of you know I’m a photographer on the weekends, and video really isn’t my thing. Recently, my boyfriend and I got ourselves a little Veho Muvi K2 camera to take to the track to grab some videos of the cars flying around the track. Now, my video and editing skills need a lot of work, but I did enjoy it, and we made a little video that we put on Youtube! Check it out!

We’ve got another race this weekend, and I’ll be trying out our new mini tripod and extending pole to get some more creative shots of the cars themselves. So there might be another video next week, keep your eyes peeled! I somehow managed to get a couple of cool links this week, so go grab a cuppa and start your weekend off with the best of the internet! Have a fantastic weekend, and until next week, here’s this week in links! Keep up with Facebook and Instagram to see what I do in between each Ginger Bites post!

So, we all thought Spring has sprung, right?! Oh, we were so wrong! The snow is back in the Drakensberg, and we’re all freezing our faces off again – this time with some rain! Sitting in bed listening to the rain is lovely, but when it’s that cold, it’s not that fun! I’m hoping spring will come back soon, because we’re totally sick of winter already!

This past week has been a big learning experience for me. I’ve learnt how to push my patience to a new level. I’ve learnt that I need to stay a designer, not an IT/email support technician. I’ve learnt that I need to say no more than I say yes, because while I love helping people, sometimes I’m not meant to help them. It’s been a very trying week to say the least, and while I’m only a few steps closer to completing a few projects, it’s better than being nowhere at all!

So, on the upside – I’m finally doing something I wanted to do from the beginning of the year. I spend a lot of time doing what I love, but I’ve turned those into businesses – my design and my photography. Any other spare time goes towards other things, usually RC racing, or photoshoots. All I wanted to do was to do something for myself, something fun but fitness related. I contemplated going back to horse riding. I contemplated doing something new. But now, I’ve found the perfect thing to do – pilates! Today’s my first class, and I’m so excited, I can’t even eat my breakfast! Here’s to new beginnings 9 months into the year!

It’s almost almost almost Spring! I know everyone says Spring Day is technically somewhere around the 21st of September, but to me, the 1st is totally Spring Day! And I’m so excited to see the warmer weather again. In fact, I even opened the giant sliding door in the office today! Granted, it is a little bit fresh, but that’s because it gets no direct sunlight until October, but it’s still so nice to have fresh air in the office. I’ve been watching all the little signs of spring, our blossom tree is finally blossoming, and the trees are starting to get their teeny little green buds. Sorry northern hemisphere, but it’s time for summer to head back this way! 😀

This week has been, um, mental. Pretty much every day for the past few weeks has been crammed full of work, and weekends are spent either meeting with clients for weddings, painting walls, racing or helping out to get the swimming school ready. We’re still a little behind schedule, but I’m hoping we’ll get everything done in time! I’m also in the process of lining up new projects to start in September, and boy are there a ton, but they all look so exciting! 🙂 I’m also so close to being able to show off some lovely new projects too! But I’m also still turning a few people away who I really can’t fit into my crazy workload at the moment, and I feel so bad! I am starting to refer to other designers, so hopefully I’ll helping out other designers with work and great clients!

I somehow managed to get a couple of cool links this week, so go grab a cuppa and start your weekend off with the best of the internet! Have a fantastic weekend, and until next week, here’s this week in links! Keep up with Facebook and Instagram to see what I do in between each Ginger Bites post!

Weekly Ginger Bites

Well, things are getting busier and busier by the day! I’m genuinely feeling bad about turning people away, but I simply can’t take on any more work. Every day is planned so careful to get as much done on projects that if I added something else, one of my clients would suffer. And I’m not too keen on that happening! So, chances are, if you’ve emailed me in the last two or three weeks, I’ve possibly said no. I’ll be taking more projects on in September when several projects have been completed. I am getting a lot of requests for September, so at this point, I may have to work on a monthly slot basis, with limited slots per month for new projects! So if you’d like me to do some work for you – give me a shout so I can add you to the September list, before it gets too full!

We’ve had plenty drama and chaos at the house, as we’ve spent the past few weeks renovating, well, a lot! We had our 40 year old pool and paving redone. We had a full battery backup system installed so we don’t lose power during load shedding. Note – we haven’t had actual load shedding since we installed the things! Murphy! We’ve gone several days without power due to electricians working and switching everything off. Thank goodness for my UPS and phone, otherwise I’d never get any work done! Having people constantly on the premises, asking for this and that, man it gets draining! I’m praying things are finally going to calm down and the house can function normally again!

This past Sunday I headed out to the stables for their dressage show. It was a lovely show, not too hectic, and the weather was amazing! I actually got a tan, and a bit burnt because I didn’t think the sun would be that strong! The photos are going towards their calendar, and one of them will be in the final calendar! We’re stilling planning shoots and getting the final photos together, but I  think it’s going to be an amazing one this year!

So, with that being said, I haven’t had all that time to browse the web, but I did find a few little gems that are totally worth grabbing a coffee for and reading! I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend, and until next week, here’s this week in links! Keep up with Facebook and Instagram to see what I do in between each Ginger Bites post!

Weekly Ginger Bites

I am back! Last week’s Ginger Bites went on hold because, well, I wasn’t anywhere near my desk. I was far away, enjoying the peace and quiet that is Magaliesburg! My boyfriend whisked me away for a long weekend into the mountains, where there are some lovely little cottages that are just too cosy and comfortable for words! I really could live there! We’ve been to Nullarbor Cottages before, and it was such a great experience we went again! 4 days away from the madness that was swallowing our home was definitely what I needed!

While I had a mountain of work to return to, it was so nice to get away, go for walks, take photos and just relax. It’ll probably be the last time I get to do this for the rest of the year, so I tried to make the most of it as best as I could.

DSC_7207-15 DSC_7216-18

In the meantime, I’m currently working on some great things, which I’ll be able to show you in a few weeks time! Next week I have a mega reveal for what’s been going on at Little Seahorses Swimming School, boy is it very very very exciting! This weekend I’m off to take photos for the Shepherd’s Fold calendar as they’re having their dressage show. It’ll be so nice to get out into the countryside and be with horses, and I can’t wait to print this calendar already!

Now, as I’ve been away, I haven’t seen much around the web, but here are a few links that I managed to stumble upon in my breaks.  I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend, and until next week, here’s this week in links! Keep up with Facebook and Instagram to see what I do in between each Ginger Bites post!

Weekly Ginger Bites

In case you thought you were going crazy – no, there was no Ginger Bites from me last week. I’m still alive – thankfully! But I wasn’t feeling too alive last Friday. With the wedding expo happening, I was hoping to avoid being sick beforehand. But my body decided differently, so I spent far too many hours in the bathroom thanks to a nasty bout of gastro! Just what you need before a wedding expo, right?! Set up was on Friday, but instead of being at the venue at 12:00 to start setting up, we got there just after 15:00, and it took 4 long hours to set up the stand. Most of those 4 hours I spent either sitting, on the floor or lying down – I felt beyond dead! My incredible boyfriend did pretty much everything, like the super star he is! Thankfully, I felt a ton better the following morning (hence the reason I was a bit late) but the show went well and I can say I’ve learnt a lot from just 2 days! It pushed me out of my comfort zone, and I’m glad I did it. Now to see if it was worth it! 🙂

Today I’ll be going on a break from a bit of the madness that is my life – I’ll be off for a whole week! My brain isn’t too happy with this idea, but I know I need it. And when I’m back in the office, I’ll be able to tackle more work with a refreshed mind and loads more creativity! I’m really looking forward to it! So that means there won’t be a Ginger Bites next week either as I’ll actually be out of town, but I’ll have plenty to show you once I’m back in the saddle and ready to go!

Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend, and until next week, here’s this week in links! Keep up with Facebook and Instagram to see what I do in between each Ginger Bites post!
